my take on the question of “do trans women have male privilege before transitioning” is, as always, “the very fact that people’s relation to oppression is so conditional - that one can be insulated from direct material harm under certain circumstances, while simultaneously being traumatized by the process in a way that merely causes indirect material harm instead - should tell you that ‘privilege’ is often an oversimplified framework when attempting to deal with the nuances of reality”
that is to say: as someone in the closet, my financial circumstances are generally better than those of my openly trans friends. however, to remain in the closet is to constantly inflict low-level psychological harm on myself in order to avoid the possibility of high-level psychological harm, financial harm, and physical harm.
can we call this “privileged?” certainly not! it’s an inherently fragile state, and one which simply changes the nature of the oppression I experience rather than removing it entirely. on the other hand, to suggest that it’s wholly irrelevant to my material conditions is self-evidently absurd

Men: “THIS IS LITERAL OPRESSION”
The automatic assumption that recruiting women equals hiring less qualified people is some serious sexism at work.
